| White space | White spaces between terms are treated as an "OR" (see below) | ||
| AND, and | Finds documents with both terms. | ||
| OR, or | Finds documents with either term A or term B or both terms. | ||
| NOT, not | Not this term. | ||
| * (asterisk) | Searches for documents with the same word stem. For example "auto*"
would include files containing words like "automotive", "automatic", "automobile",
but not "autistic". The asterisk can not be combined with quotation marks (") to formulate phrases, neither can "+" or "-"! |
||
| -term (minus) | Leaves out this term.(*) | ||
| +term (plus) | Includes this term.(*) (*)NB: To use "+" and/or "-" there must always be a minimum of one term without the "+" or "-" ! Example: Ford +car : RIGHT! ("car" must be present, "Ford" must not, but can be) +Ford +car : WRONG! (To search for both terms use the following formula: Ford AND car) |
||
| Phrases | Phrases should be between quotation marks (").The asterisk (*) can not be combined with phrases! | ||
| Capital/small letters | When searching, for example, using
the term NBC, the search engine would find only those sites containing that exact
capitalisation. Using nbc however, would ignore the capitalisation
and find all terms (with capital or small letters), for example NBC,
nbc, NBc, nBC, etc. Usually it is more meaningful to input the search word in lower case (higher score) |
